Use of triptans for the treatment of migraine headaches

For the many millions of people who suffer from migraines finding an effective treatment has been difficult and has a considerable time. Even after years of research, there is no miracle cure, but a new class of drugs known as triptans are as close to a miracle cure as we did for these often intensely painful headaches that are arriving every moment.
The triptans are a form of the drug is chemically similar to serotonin, a messenger substance that is believed to play a role in causing migraines. As with many medicines treatments, success often comes from the creation of a connection is chemically similar to a naturally occurring chemical in the body and using this to promote levels in the body during periods in which symptoms occur. In this case triptans attach themselves to receptors of the body where the natural biochemical would normally be found, but the behavior is slightly different to alleviate symptoms. Technically triptans are a class of medications known as 5-HT1B/1D agonists.
Although these new drugs have proved effective in many cases of migraine, there are some studies which suggest that they are effective for migraine sufferers, lack of sensitivity of the skin. For these people do experience sensitivity of the skin during an attack, triptans can be effective, but they should as soon as possible after the start of a migraine, and preferably within no more than about 20 minutes after onset of symptoms.
In many cases of migraine sufferers experience what is known as “aura” before the beginning of their headaches and this is not only the warning signs of a rapprochement with headaches, but also the cue to start treatment. Although not all patients experience an aura for those who do it, but very different is essentially a visual impairment, consisting of such things to see, such as spots or flashing lights.
Triptanubergebrauch drugs began in the 1990s, and there are now several types of these drugs under a variety of different commercial names. A very common treatment is sumatriptan, which is sold under the brand name Imitrex. This first generation of drugs is very effective, but still not quite do the trick as well as doctors would have wished, and so today we see a second generation of effective triptans. These include Zolmitriptan (Zomig sold) and Rizatriptan (Maxalt sold).
This second-generation drugs are often referred to as’ abort ‘or’ interrupts’ because they are designed to create a migraine in an early stage and before he builds in the intense and pulsating pain, so familiar to migraine sufferers. The second generation triptans are preferred by many patients because they are not to be taken before the arrival of the headache, which is difficult to predict how the symptoms are not always very strong. In addition, they are effective for a longer period of time, it is also important for those People whose migraines can be used for the last few days instead of hours. triptans can also help to alleviate or eliminate other migraine symptoms like nausea and vomiting.
Another problem is often associated with traditional medicines in pill form is that they require that the water in the hands of the pill and then take some time to work as the pill is broken down and absorbed into the bloodstream. Many of the new triptans, however, as Rizatriptan (Maxalt as markets), are in a form of wafers simply dissolves on the tongue and drugs are now available in the form of nasal sprays, which are very fast.
As with any medication triptans perform a number of side effects and you should consult your doctor before using any of these medications to treat your migraines.
